AI is disrupting tasks, not jobs — and that changes everything
Ask a leadership team where AI will change their organization and they will point at roles: which jobs disappear, which get added. But roles are bundles, and AI does not consume bundles — it consumes tasks. The disruption is invisible on the org chart and enormous inside every job on it.
That is why workforce plans built on headcount keep missing. The unit of analysis is wrong. Map the tasks — where information is copied, reconciled, re-entered, summarized, chased — and the picture changes completely: a third of most knowledge jobs is friction that a well-designed system, with or without AI, should never have produced.
The organizations that win the next five years will not be the ones with an “AI strategy.” They will be the ones that redesigned work at the task level and let the technology land on a surface that was ready for it.
